Fitness Scams

By Tracie Johanson Caveat emptor is Latin for “let the buyer beware”. Nowhere is this phrase more applicable than in the weight loss industry of today. It seems that every time we turn around we are blasted and bombarded with the latest, greatest, new and improved treatment for obesity. From miracle pills to the latest fad diet, the gimmicks just keep coming. The sad truth is that few of these products work. Even fewer will result in real, permanent and lasting fat loss. A very few of the weight loss gimmicks on the market today are not only a consumer rip-off, but they are also quite dangerous…..even deadly. Caveat emptor indeed! -> A PRIME SUSPECT? As an example, consider the prescription diet drug Meridia. Does it help you lose weight? For some people, the answer is yes. For others, the answer is no. Can it kill you? The answer to this question seems to be a nervous ‘maybe’. “The consumer group Public Citizen had petitioned the Food and Drug Administration for a ban, citing Meridia users who died of heart problems as young as their 20s and 30s. Even before Meridia was approved for sale, the FDA knew it could increase users’ blood pressure, the group contended.” (Source: www.cnn.com) Recently the FDA again refused to ban Meridia, even though whistleblower David Graham (an FDA drug safety officer) testified to Congress last fall that his agency was allowing five unsafe medicines to stay on the market, including Meridia. -> ANOTHER PRIME SUSPECT? Ephedra was banned in the United States last year, in part due to numerous deaths attributed to this popular weight loss supplement. On April 14, a federal Judge in Utah reversed the short-lived ban on ephedra. Within minutes, spammers were filling our email boxes with messages to BUY BUY BUY before ephedra was banned again. One of these spammers, on their website, states that “Finally, the forbidden fat-burning herb banned for being ‘too effective’ Ephedra is available to the public again”. We’re not going to quote the source on this one because we don’t want to give this guy any free publicity. Yes, ephedra will help some people lose weight. Yes, ephedra is safe for some people in low doses. But there is that little nagging fact that people have DIED and that their deaths have been attributed to ephedra use….. -> MORE EXAMPLES “The Advertising Standards Authority in Great Britian has ordered L’Oreal to pull ads for an anti-cellulite cream. The board found that claims as to the effects and timeliness of the skin treatment were misleading and could not be backed up by any research. The ads featured Claudia Schiffer and L’Oreal has agreed to make changes to the advertisements.” (Source: www.adjab.com) For whatever reason, some people have decided that anabolic steroids are the best way to lose weight. Despite the well-documented and serious side-effects of steroid use, the lure of easy weight loss has caused many to throw caution to the wind. Perhaps the most concerning trend is steroid use among our teenage population: “Teens also listed steroids, growth hormone, amino acids and other potentially unhealthful products among those they’d tried in the previous year.” (Source: www.cnn.com) -> THE SAFE AND EFFECTIVE ALTERNATIVE Caveat emptor (let the buyer beware) is indeed the rule when it comes to many weight loss gimmicks. However, there is one weight loss method that has never been banned, has never led to an investigation, and has never been been listed on a ‘whistleblower’ fraud report: EXERCISE. Exercise is the only path to health and fitness that virtually every doctor in the world agrees upon. Exercise is safe, effective, and brings many more benefits to our lives than diets or drugs ever will. Exercise is fun, invigorating, motivating and the single most powerful way to improve our life and well-being! Instead of looking for another short-cut to weight loss success, choose the proven method that gets results. Choose exercise. * Copyright 2005 Pick Up The Pace. 12 Things Your Relationship Should Have to Succeed (2)

By Elaine Sihera Having covered the essential Top 6, it is now time to look at the next 6 which are important but can be treated more flexibly: 7. Acceptance: Are you living your life constantly trying to please someone else, wearing only what they suggest, dressing only to please them, seeking their approval daily? Then you are not being accepted for who you are in your relationship. One main offshoot of that is you are likely to constantly feel inadequate and not being able to do anything right. You will feel controlled and impotent to do things or behave in a way which reflect your desires and what you want to do. Worst of all, your growth will be retarded because you need someone else’s permission for doing the basic things which give you joy. For example, if you like wearing bright colours but are living with someone who hates bright colours, then you made the wrong choice because your personality will always feel repressed. Anyone who wants you must like you, warts and all. Otherwise there will be little of the next attribute: respect. 8. Respect: This is a key value but the reason why it is in the second group is because one cannot be certain there is proper respect until some time has elapsed because anyone will do anything to please in the first few days or weeks. The real person gradually reveals themself over many weeks or months. However, respect is assumed if the top 6 are in place, unless they’re not, which suggests very little respect. Hidden within the value of respect is courtesy and sensitivity. I loathe discourteous behaviour in others simply because I learnt from a young age that “Courtesy costs nothing. Give generously.” Often it is not the actual things we say or do which really upsets someone, but the discourteous and insensitive manner in which they are done. When a relationship is on the rocks, respect is one of the first casualties to go. It is difficult to respect partners when we feel resentful towards them or we are frustrated and hurt by their behaviour. For some people, respect will be right at the top, but my reasoning for putting it much lower is that someone can respect me highly but, if none of the top values are present, no amount of respect will let me love them. That is why many potential love affairs stay on a friendship level because the bottom group of values might be present between two people, but without the top ones there to bolster them and move them into the ‘love’ territory. 9. Being Tactile: This is another beautiful word many people love to use without quite knowing what it means. But if you have never used it before it is perfect for describing the tangible and external elements of being in love. To be tactile means you love to hold someone, to hug them, to draw them close, to be emotionally expressive with them, no matter where you are at that moment in time. You find it hard to keep your hands to yourself with your partner a wonderful expression of love. Some people don’t like too much touching but I wouldn’t go near anyone who doesn’t want to hold or hug because I am a natural hugger. I love to be embraced and also like people who are romantic. When we make the extra effort to show people we care about them, they are likely to make the effort to return that compliment. 10 Generosity: This value is not just associated with money. Generosity involves giving of the self, whatever we have, including our love and feelings, to another. People who are mean with things tend to be mean with themself and their emotions too, what I call the ‘emotionally constipated types’. There is no place for selfishness in a relationship. People come together to share, not to remain the same way as when they were single. If that is the case why bother with a relationship at all? That’s just using the other person. A desire to share and be supportive is at the heart of generosity. If your loved one won’t support your dreams, aspirations or achievements, that is not a foundation for any long-term relationship. Soon resentment will creep in and erode all the love. 11. Encouragement: Do you feel encouraged by your partner? Often jealousy and insecurity prevent us from supporting and encouraging our spouses. Yet, any partnership should lay the foundation for a mutual journey together where the couple can achieve far more than they would have done as single people. When we choose not to support our partners, what are we actually saying about ourselves and our feelings of worth? Again, if we expect encouragement but give none, what message are we giving to our lovers about their own growth and fulfilment? Perhaps encouragement matters to you so much, it would be in your top 6. That is fine. However, if it is essential to you, then teaming up with someone who is mean with praise or encouragement will be like a nightmare for you because you will always feel unappreciated and undervalued, one of the biggest causes of unhappiness in relationships. 12. Non-Controlling: I tend to attract controllers, for some reason, so all the key men in my life have scored highly on controlling behaviour. There is always some control when one party is passive, or is seeking approval, but too much control tends to spill over into restrictiveness, repression and ultimately violence. The more flexible and relaxed a partner is, the lesser the desire to control which makes for greater equality and respect between the couple. One test for the level of control in a relationship is this question: How do you feel if your partner talks about his/her former lovers/partners? If you feel at all jealous, when they are in the past and are a crucial part of your lover’s history, that is a form of insecurity and control. As long as you are not being compared unfavourably, that’s fine. Every person we have ever had in our life, for whatever reason, has taught us something and helped to make us what we are. To then deny their presence in our life, or deliberately ignore their part of our journey, merely to please someone else is not very good to the health of a relationship, because it is tied up with Acceptance and Respect. We cannot accept someone or respect them, if we want them to reject the people they know or pretend they did not exist. So long as they are not still rivals, people should be encouraged to celebrate their past, to be proud of it, to learn from it and move on, not to be made to feel guilty or ashamed of it. That only erodes personal confidence and self-esteem. Worse still it is a denial of that person’s existence into what we would like it to be. Your score out of 120 is a pointer to the current state of your relationship, especially what is missing from it. Anything over 90 points is very good. Under 90 and you are in shaky ground and need to take remedial action. Under 50 points, and if you are not heading for the divorce courts already, sad to say, it could just be a matter of time because too many things you both care about would be missing. The most fascinating exercise is to do the rating separately, according to your individual perceptions, and then exchange notes afterwards. I guarantee that, if things are not too wonderful in the relationship, you will both need a referee!! Intellectual Property Forums Make $100 Billion Industry Accessible To Innovators

By Neil Armand The intellectual property transfer market is now estimated to be worth over $100 billion. If you have a new idea, an invention, a new art or craft, you may be able to license it or sell it for millions of dollars. Many Fortune 500 companies are now making their intellectual property available for sale or licensing at new online intellectual-property exchanges. These companies are trying to maximize their return on research and development investment and generate a new source of revenue by licensing their unused and underutilized inventions to others. A number of online forums, including Minnesota-based NewIdeaTrade.com (http://www.newideatrade.com), California-based Pl-x.com (http://www.pl-x.com), and Connecticut-based PatentTriage.com (http://www.patenttriage.com”) now link buyers and sellers of intellectual property. The traditional transfer of intellectual property is complicated, costly, and can take up to one year. However, these online forums simplify and speed up the process for transfer of new ideas. The Internet currently reaches more than 600 million users around the world. This makes innovators potential for exposure much higher than with traditional forms of media. The worldwide online commerce has reached $2.2 trillion in 2002 and is expected to reach $6.8 trillion by 2005. The innovators today can leverage the massive reach of the Internet and promote their new ideas to the global market without substantial marketing costs. Additional information on how to market intellectual property is available at http://www.newideatrade.com. Mid-Summer Checkup: Heat-Related Health Problems

By Kitty Bradshaw Its the middle of summer, a time Oriental medicine describes as the Fire season. The heart is your bodys primary focus during summer; its the internal organ where the heat of Fire concentrates. In addition to heat-related problems that can directly affect the heart during summer, you have other internal organs that are also heat sensitive, like the liver, which has a tendency to become overheated during this time of year, making you more vulnerable to feeling irritated. Water Cools Fire: Summer’s Impact on Your Kidneys and Bladder If your liver has a tendency to get unbalanced, it can release quite a bit of heat during the summer, which in turn causes all sorts of heat-related problems, like high blood pressure, rashes and hives. In nature, when fire becomes excessive it also becomes dangerous, and water is needed to control it, its the same way with your body in summer. Considering this, as your body draws on its water resources to cool itself down, your Water element organs, which are the kidneys and the urinary bladder, tend to get overworked, and if they are weak or unbalanced to begin with, you can experience discomforts, and potentially a crisis, related to those organs. The ‘Water’ energy of kidneys cools down other organs that get overheated in summer. Maintaining Your Engine Avoids Problems Its a lot like the radiator in a car, the water in the radiator provides the cooling mechanism for the engine, which keeps the whole thing from overheating. When the water is low, or the radiator runs dry, which is equivalent to the kidneys being weak and unbalanced, the engine is at risk; so too your body is at some risk when your kidneys are taxed by heat during the summer. This is an Oriental medicine example of why many people experience problems like high blood pressure in the summer. Summer Health Tips It’s important to drink enough water and eat the right foods to ensure you’re meeting your body’s summertime needs. Drink more water. Because it’s hot and you perspire a lot during the summer, the average amount of water you should drink in a 24-hour period is 48 ounces this includes all fluids, such as, juice, soda, and other beverages. (Note: 48 ounces is the equivalent of 6 eight ounce glasses.) When you are sweating more than usual as on some days in the summer drinking more is advisable. It’s important to pay attention to how you feel, and drink more when you’re thirsty. Monitor your intake of salt. An imbalance of salt in your body too much, or too little can readily occur when temperatures are hot. You will know you’re getting too much salt if you find that rings you wear get tighter, and socks or shoes that fit you comfortably during cooler weather, leave lines or wrinkles on your feet or ankles because of too much fluid in those areas. Eat cooling foods. Cucumbers, mung beans, and watermelon are particularly good foods to eat in the summer. They help to keep your body cool, and because of their diuretic properties, they also help to offset excess salt intake. A More Viable Alternative to Secured Loans

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Puneet_Nayyar]Puneet Nayyar When wants of a person increase at a rapid rate, the only solution left for him or her is to go for a loan. When lenders try to outsmart each other because of the cutthroat competition, the selection of a single loan becomes a problem, which every borrower faces. When the so-called luxuries become necessities, the limited resources act as a hindrance in your way of fulfilling your desires. Rubbing salt into the wound, most of the people dont have any security to back the loan. They should not be disheartened as the facility of unsecured loan is waiting in the wings for them. People, who do not have anything to offer as collateral, [http://www.online-unsecured-loans.co.uk/unsecured-loan.html ]unsecured loans act as saviours for them. The fact that you dont have to offer security is good enough to drive tenants towards unsecured loans. This kind of a loan is best suitable for homeowners also who do not want to risk their property. No wonder, most of the borrowers in the UK are attracted towards unsecured loans. There is a cluster of loan websites these days, which help you in obtaining the loan of your choice. You can do the easy task of filling up their online loan application form and they will do the hard task of searching lenders for you. They might charge a nominal fee from you for their specialised services. Besides filling up the online application form, one should carry out an extensive research also, as when it comes to money, you wouldnt want to trust anybody but yourself. A lot of time is wasted for procuring secured loans, as there are lots of legal formalities involved in it, which one has to comply with. In unsecured loans, no such lengthy procedures are involved because the torturing paper work is not there. This is the most important reason, which gives an unsecured loan a clear edge over the secured loan. If such a loan has advantages, it carries some negative points also. You will be charged with a high rate of interest, in lieu of the risk your lenders are taking in lending you money without any collateral. They are just relying on your credit worthiness and repayment strength. You should not turn blind because you are in dire need of money. You should remember that even unsecured loans have to be repaid. So, compare the offers of various loan providers and select the best possible deal for yourself at the end of the day. Besides this, an unsecured loan does not offer you a large amount of money because of the risk factor hovering over such kind of loan. Unsecured loans are gaining popularity fast because of the increase in number of repossession of borrowers property by the lenders. Summary: When the so-called luxuries become necessities of life, the limited resources act as a hindrance in your way of fulfilling your desires. Rubbing salt into the wound, most of the people dont have any security to back the loan. They should not be disheartened as the facility of unsecured loans is waiting in the wings for them. Unsecured Loans enjoy an edge over Secured Loans with respect to the promptness of approval. In Unsecured Loans, a large amount of time is saved because of the fact that no property valuation is required like secured loans. This is one of the reasons- why unsecured loans are preferred over secured loans? Though the Unsecured Loan has got its share of advantages but there are some points, which should not skip your mind before applying for an Unsecured Loan. Lets check out some of them: Unsecured Loans generally offer a higher rate of interest as compared to Secured Loans. Unlike Secured Loans, Unsecured Loans generally dont offer a large amount of money. Like any other type of loan, an Unsecured Loan also needs to be repaid. So, before applying for an Unsecured Loan, do your calculations, analyse your financial position, like, the amount you want to borrow, the repayment option, whether you will be able to afford it or not. Based on these findings, you should dig out the lender who provides the best possible offer. Recently, because of an increase in the number of repossessions of the borrowers properties by the lenders, an Unsecured Loan has become a much more favoured option to both the homeowners as well as tenants. Build Good Listening Skills To Enhance Your Relationship

By Ted Segura Are you listening to me? This is a common phrase heard between couples during a typical conversation. On a larger scale, there are several cultures where people seem to talk all at the same time and you wonder if anyone is listening. It appears ridiculous to see two, three or more people talking at the same time to each other in a group. While it looks funny, there can be a communication lesson that can be learned here. But more importantly, in a relationship constant communication is essential. In fact, it is vital not to keep on guessing what is in the mind of the other person. To build good listening skills in a relationship is a critical element in keeping communication open. Everyone wants the other person to listen to him or her when hes doing the talking. But not everyone wants to listen. More often or not, we always have something to say and we like to look for an audience to listen to us. However, being a good listener is not an accident. To build good listening skills in a relationship can be learned. And being a good listener can make you a great conversationalist to your partner. This would add spice to the relationship and not make it boring. Learn to be an good active listener. Here are some steps to being a good active listener: 1.Look at your partner when he or she is talking This would give the impression that you are truly listening. Eye contact is crucial in active listening. Looking away or elsewhere gives the other a feeling that you are not interested in what he has to say. 2.Lean towards your spouse and listen intently This action shows interest in what your spouse is saying. Body language, at times, says more than what you are actually saying. Smiling, and nodding in response encourages people to continue speaking, and it shows that your attention is focused on the conversation. Don’t move around and say Go ahead I’m listening while you’re fixing or working on something. 3.Save your comments at the end While your spouse is speaking, don’t butt in. You wouldn’t want that to happen to you. Much as you have good suggestions, save it at the end. Don’t think what to say next because while you’re thinking, you’re not listening. Another is jumping to another topic other than what your partner is saying. That will tell him or her that you are not interested in what he or she is saying. After he is done, say encouraging thoughts or suggestions and nothing negative. 4.Be patient when listening Don’t hurry up your spouse especially when he or she is excited to tell you a story, an experience or more so a problem Sometimes we may have many things to do but it is very important that you put all these aside first and give all your attention to your spouse. This act of love is one way of showing that your spouse is important. He will also feel your love and will be very happy and appreciate you more. These steps help in improving communication. To build good listening skills in a relationship especially with love will ensure a solid partnership. As stated earlier, improved communication between spouses or partners is key to having that relationship always fresh and exciting. Ted and Christine Segura have been involved in the topic of relationships for several years. They are seriously involved in an organization that helps couples and families in the areas of family life and enhancing relations. They can be contacted at http://www.idealfamilylife.com. Goal Setting: Monetary Goals, Material Goals And Job Goals For Your Career

By Carl Mueller What does goal setting refer to in a career context? In a career context, goal setting can refer to several different things depending on your overall goals (obviously!) and what you are trying to accomplish in your career and in your life in general: Your goals might be short term or long term or a combination of both. Hopefully you’ll be planning for the long term while realizing that short term decisions may help or hurt your ability to reach the longer term goals you set out for yourself. Here are some types of goals you might set for yourself related to your career. Monetary Goals How important is money to you? Certainly we don’t work for free but for many people there is more to life than simply the amount of money they earn. On the other hand there isn’t necessarily anything wrong with goal setting that relates to the salary you want to earn by a certain age or the amount of money you want to have in the bank by that time. While it might be easy to say that “I’d do that job for a $100K” there are some jobs that might not be worth the hassle, the stress, the grief and everything else that goes along with it even for that amount of money. Some jobs on the other hand might be ones you’d do for freeor thereabouts. Obviously you’d have to really love that sort of job to suggest you’d do it for free but finding a job you love can go a long way to reduce the importance of money in your career. Material Goals Related to monetary goals, you might have goal setting in place that relates to material goods that you want to acquire in your life. Maybe you want to own a house(s) and have a nice car(s) and a summer home(s) and other things by a certain point in time. Certainly your earning power will determine your ability to reach certain material goals you have set out for yourself. Your career decisions such as the jobs you accept, the education level you achieve and the companies you choose to work for can go a long way to determining whether or not you have the means to achieve your material goals. If not, you’ll need to figure out whether your material goals get lowered or if you need to increase your income and if so, how. Level of Position Goals How important is your job title to you and your position in the company? Climbing the corporate ladder is an example of goal setting related to your desire to move up in the corporate world and achieve a certain level of position or job title. To some people job titles and corporate ladder climbing is important, to other people, not so much. You’ll need to decide for yourself. When you’re busy with your goal setting, consider what is important to you and try your best to realistically determine the path to get there. Remember that career decisions and choices you make now can impact you later in life.
